A Few Notes Between Friends features 13 NEW works for band which are conducted by 8 different outstanding conductors. Since this CD is music all by the same composer and despite the fact that all of the works on this CD are very different from each other, Julie Giroux and Dennis Fisher came up with an innovative idea. Each piece would be recorded with a different conductor letting each present their own interpretation of the works. Same Group, Same Hall, Same recording technicians but with a different conductor for each recording session. The result was absolutely amazing! The group literally sounded different with each conductor with the first down beat.
The personalities of the conductors, their techniques, styles, stage presence and of course their interpretations molded the band into a group unique to that conductor. The students endured a marathon week of recording having to learn to follow and respond quickly to all these conductors and their individual styles and demands. The first day started with Col. Bruce Gilkes(retired) and the week ended with a television and film legend, Mr. Bill Conti who also gave a very motivating clinic on being a professional musican & composer while he was there. It was a fantastic journey. It was all caught on audio, video and on camera. This CD is exciting in every aspect. The music is incredible. The UNT Symphonic Band gives an inspiring performance. The conductors brought their "A" game infusing the works with breath, life and creativity.
How were the conductors chosen? They are all friends not only with Julie Giroux, who had written works for all of these conductors in the past, but also with each other. It is safe to say that all of the people who worked on this project are not only workaholics, but people who have dedicated their careers and their lives to making music and it shows with every single note. This is one CD you do not want to miss!
